If salary was not a factor and your living expenses were covered, what would you do for a living and how would you spend your time?
In this 21st century Information Technology (IT) has changed the world in an unprecedented way. It is a revolution that everyone wants to be a part of and to say that each and every sector in the human arena is touched by IT is not an exaggeration. As I was growing up in the mid 90’s, I realized that those who control information are the most powerful people on the planet. One of the biggest advantages of IT is it dispenses information to anyone and everyone willing to seek information thus breaking the power barrier. As a computer science engineer it is my privilege to empower each individual with the information necessary to help grow and to chase their dream with a click of the mouse, and I would not trade this for anything else.
For the past eight years in an attempt to stabilize my life I took the less risky path and worked for big corporation’s helping them serve their mission. What I would do if my living expenses were covered is, starting my own company, where I can serve people directly, interact with my customers daily and see the impact I made in this world more visibly. I have a couple of causes that I wish to serve. One of them is to start an organization that would encourage entrepreneurship at village level. Currently, the unemployment rate world over is very high and this is especially true in the rural areas. People from rural areas are moving into the cities for more opportunities, and in turn this creates excess demand for services in the cities. I would like to encourage rural entrepreneurship which would in turn create opportunities for rural population. With the IT revolution I think the world is prepared for such change as we are able to interact remotely, better than ever. Another cause I would want to work towards is zero carbon emissions. The need to effect change in our world is greater than ever, now is our opportunity to be the change agents and make a positive difference .As part of this effort I would like to startup an organization that would help individuals and corporations to calculate their carbon footprint based on parameters like electricity consumption, cooking fuel, meat and dairy consumption, local and national travel, then provide solutions to reduce the footprint. There is increasing curiosity and awareness among people to calculate their carbon footprint and I see a huge entrepreneurship opportunity. I can collect data of these footprints and present trends to government agencies or other corporations which are striving for the same cause.
Additionally, I would like to teach. Teachers have the tremendous responsibility to shape the future generation, I am where I am because of my teachers and I consider the profession very noble .I would like to spend a few hours a week teaching, motivating students to create a value for them and for society. I would also spend more time volunteering, for an organization called BRAIN INJURY SERVICES INC, whose mission is to improve lives of people who are affected by brain injury.
I would also like to make some positive lifestyle changes that will help me evolve as a better person. I would like to go on vacations with my family, now and then, to get away from the everyday stresses of life to have fun, to relax and to rejuvenate. Taking vacations actually boosts ones productivity and in today’s stressful world it is highly recommended. I would participate in the “let’s move” initiative by Mrs. Obama and spend more time on cooking food at home, encouraging my daughter to eat at home. I also want to read more books; Books such as How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell etc... which will help me both personally and professionally. I would exercise more and would love to join workout classes, dance classes and Pilate’s classes which will help me stay healthy and active. I would also learn new activities such as swimming, ice skating and skiing. Learning new things in life in my opinion is a great way to boost confidence and keep one on the edge.
In conclusion, by not having to worry about the salary and how living expenses would be met, I can concentrate more on the humanitarian causes that are close to my heart and make a greater impact on the society, be more selfless, and spend more time for others. By working for the causes that I deeply care about, and matching them with the skills that I have acquired over the years, I can achieve a better sense of satisfaction and fulfillment.
